NASA: Chilean quake pushes earth of its axis and shortens earth days

Not living in Chile or close to it has not saved us from the effects. My question is does this happen after every natural disaster and if so why is this not being reported?

"The Feb. 27 magnitude 8.8 earthquake in Chile may have shortened the length of each Earth day.

JPL research scientist Richard Gross computed how Earth's rotation should have changed as a result of the Feb. 27 quake. Using a complex model, he and fellow scientists came up with a preliminary calculation that the quake should have shortened the length of an Earth day by about 1.26 microseconds (a microsecond is one millionth of a second).

Perhaps more impressive is how much the quake shifted Earth's axis. Gross calculates the quake should have moved Earth's figure axis (the axis about which Earth's mass is balanced) by 2.7 milliarcseconds (about 8 centimeters, or 3 inches). Earth’s figure axis is not the same as its north-south axis; they are offset by about 10 meters (about 33 feet).

By comparison, Gross said the same model estimated the 2004 magnitude 9.1 Sumatran earthquake should have shortened the length of day by 6.8 microseconds and shifted Earth's axis by 2.32 milliarcseconds (about 7 centimeters, or 2.76 inches).

Gross said that even though the Chilean earthquake is much smaller than the Sumatran quake, it is predicted to have changed the position of the figure axis by a bit more for two reasons. First, unlike the 2004 Sumatran earthquake, which was located near the equator, the 2010 Chilean earthquake was located in Earth's mid-latitudes, which makes it more effective in shifting Earth's figure axis. Second, the fault responsible for the 2010 Chiliean earthquake dips into Earth at a slightly steeper angle than does the fault responsible for the 2004 Sumatran earthquake. This makes the Chile fault more effective in moving Earth's mass vertically and hence more effective in shifting Earth's figure axis.

Gross said the Chile predictions will likely change as data on the quake are further refined."

Frostbitten

I got home from work today and began taking off my seven layers of clothes. At layer three I started to wonder why my mother moved us from the warm paradise of my birth St. Vincent. So I began looking for images of the Caribbean to warm up my frostbitten soul. This is what I came up with.

Neglect

School and general daily life has taken its wrath out on this blog in the form of abandonment. We've missed much but we intend to catch up.

Happy turkey day, Merry Christmas, and Happy new year.

What do you think?

Do you find these pictures disturbing? Apparently at least one man does. A father buying Haribo candy for his family was extremely disgusted with them:

"Simon Simpkins was buying Haribo MAOAM sour candies for his children when he noticed the 'pornographic' illustrations of limes, lemons and cherries romping with each other.

Mr Simpkins, of Pontefract, West Yorkshire, said: 'The lemon and lime are locked in what appears to be a carnal encounter.

'The lime, whom I assume to be the gentleman in this coupling, has a particularly lurid expression on his face."

But here's the thing. I'd like to know who decided that the green thing is a lime...Why would the lime get arms and legs but not the lemon??? Or the cherries???? I agree the green guy is probably the "gentleman", but couldn't he just be salivating in his greed to consume the fruit?...But then, why would the fruit be so delighted?

I suppose this remains a mystery, but, all in all, HARIBO candies are fantastic, and if they want their ads and characters to get a lil fruity with it, so be it!

the simpsons reinvented

Maybe I'm late with post, I don't know or care, just thought I would share. As a kid I always thought The Simpsons was an ethnic cartoon family, Im sure I'm not the only one. (Marge's fro, Bart and Lisa's "spikes"...comeon) I was wrong, they're a middle class, mid american caucasian family. Until now...DUN DUN DUN!!!! The simpsons are going to be finally aired in Angola, and to make them more relatable, they've been remade as this:

Im not sure whats up with the speakers, Bart's fade, or Maggie's "new diaper", but they certainly got some new..swagga?!lol
