Swap A Rama

I had a blast last weekend at Swap A Rama. I made a hat and learned basic sewing on a machine!! I only got to go to the second day due to work but it was more than worth it.



Swap A Rama is a two day DIY craft fair started by Wendy Tremayne.
It brings together professional artist/designers who teach participants how to:
Make Hats
Do Natural Dyeing
Silk Screen
Do Embroidery
Make T-Shirt Scarves
Make Handbags
Basic Sewing on Machines (Assisted and DIY)



To participate you bring a bag of unwanted clothes/fabric/shoes in usable condition and pay a "suggested donation" (20 dollars) which mean you can pay whatever you can =()!
It is a traveling fair so you can register to host one in your city.

Frostbitten

I got home from work today and began taking off my seven layers of clothes. At layer three I started to wonder why my mother moved us from the warm paradise of my birth St. Vincent. So I began looking for images of the Caribbean to warm up my frostbitten soul. This is what I came up with.

Rodarte 20 10 zombie approved

Love the death valley inspired Rodarte spring collection. Personally I don't get the goth vibe everybody is talking about. When I think of goth I get pictures of velvet, capes, corsets, laces, and victorian times. To me, its more DIY warrior earth wear which is really kicking my ass with its greatness. Im all about DIY anything and this definitely has me rummaging through my scrap piles like crazy. Im really feeling the handmade-esque vibe of the shoes which is the only reason fashion week caught my eye this year. I was planning to skip blogging about it, but Rodarte has my creative wheels turning again.

stray cat rock: sex hunter

I've been obsessing over trying to remember a movie that i've never actually seen before. 2 years ago my boyfriend and I rented a bunch of obscure foreign films (from the greatest video store in the world), and in one of the (french) films we saw a preview for a movie that has intrigued me since now. The problem is, I wrote the name of the movie down and I cant remember where.

Anyway, I was searching through the foreign movies on netflix trying to jog my memory and I came across this:



Stray cat rock: sex hunter is one of five in the early 70's Japanese Stray cat rock series. Its about a gang of bad girls called the alley cats who occasionally run around with a gang of thugs called the eagles. One of the alleycats is secretly dating a biracial Japanese boy which really angers the pure blood eagles who start a war on all the "half-breeds".

The story continues from there in a stylish, sexy, and violent spiral. I really couldn't be happier I found this movie. The acting and soundtrack are great, the cinematography was interesting, and the costumes where freaking fantastic. Plus the actor who played Kazuma looked a hell of a lot like Obama. Go see for yourself.

A cure for boredom

I've been really bored with my hair. I thought adding in the color last month would ease my feelings of lame hair, but nope. Not even a little bit! So at the beginning of july I added in some butt length wanna be Naomi braids minus the straightness. The first day the hair was really big, bushy, and beautiful, but the next few weeks it turned into a frizzy, tangly mess. I needed a way to hide the tangly-ness. As a beauty school dropout, I knew rolls and updos, are a great way to make a bad hair day better (to me). I've never done this with extensions before but I think for a first try it came out good, and at least its better than before.

Gwen Stefani has stepped into my hair radar. I've always loved her style , but her hair never interested me until now. I've been obsessively searching for new hairstyles to cure my itch to do something drastic to my hair. I've had every color under the sun in my hair and for once I would like to leave my natural color alone. I love how creative her recent hairstyling has been, (maybe thanks to a certain band reuniting) so I will attempt to recreate a few of them on afro hair. Stay tuned.

OWNING YOUR HEART

On a recent search for the right glasses for my face, I came across a plethora of sites calling my shape "least desirable" of all shapes (oval is the "best"). Out of all the face shapes, the heart, inverted triangle, cat/ant, whatever you want to call it, seems to get the most shit. This shape is usually characterized by high cheekbones, wide set eyes, and broader forehead than chin. Hmmmmm. Personally I don't give a crap if you like my face or its shape or not, but its certainly unfair to discriminate. From what I noticed riding the subways all day, this shape is most common.

If you haven't noticed, hearts own the bob. Shoulder length or shorter works the best, anything that balances out the chin. The best glasses for a heart shape are square frames or rimless.
